Mbeumo scores back-to-back games as Man United defeat Arsenal

Share

Bryan Mbeumo was on the score sheet once again as Manchester United defeated Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Cameroonian found the back of the net last time out in the 2-0 derby win over Manchester City that started Michael Carrick’s reign as interim head coach.

Lisandro Martinez put the Gunners ahead in the 29th minute but that lead lasted only eight minutes as Mbeumo levelled for his eighth league goal of the season.

He became the first United player to score against Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in the same season since Marcus Rashford during the 2022-23 campaign and the first to do so in his debut season since Robin van Persie in 2012-13.

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu put the Red Devils 2-1 five minutes into the second half with a sublime strike from distance and it remained in their favour until Mikel Merino levelled in the 84th minute. It was also short-lived as Kobbie Mainoo set up substitute Matheus Cunha for the winner three minutes later.

The victory took United up to the coveted fourth place on the table, one point ahead of Chelsea who defeated 10-man Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park without the presence of star player Cole Palmer, and maintained the perfect start for new head coach Liam Rosenior in all competitions.

At the Gtech Community Stadium, Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first goal of the season as Nottingham Forest defeated Brentford 2-0 to move five points clear of the relegation zone in 17th place.

At St. James’ Park, Aston Villa defeated Newcastle United 2-0 to move within four points of Arsenal and level on points with second-placed Manchester City.
