Ghana captain Jordan Ayew opened his Sheffield United account with a header, but Matty Godden's late strike handed Charlton a 2-1 Championship win.
Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has finally got his Sheffield United goal. It came in a losing cause at The Valley on Saturday, where Charlton Athletic won 2-1 in the Championship.
Charlton struck first through Millenic Alli in the 12th minute. Ayew pulled United level with a headed equaliser, a first strike in Blades colours that put his side back in the contest.
With 11 minutes left, Matty Godden restored the hosts' lead. It was his second goal of the season, and it ended an 11-game winless league run for the Addicks. It was also their first league victory since August 29, and it lifts them to 19th, seven points clear of the relegation zone.
For Sheffield United, the loss ended a four-match unbeaten run and slowed their push up the table. Ayew was recalled to the starting XI after the midweek win over Preston North End, along with Liam Kitching and Kalvin Phillips. Mark McGuinness, Jairo Riedewald and Tom Cannon dropped to the bench.
The Black Stars skipper will take heart from finally getting off the mark, but the Blades still need to find consistency if they want to climb the standings.
